Bartolo Colon’s Debut

When the White Sox signed Bartolo Colon, no one knew what he would do. He was getting old, coming off an injury. Many people, including me, felt that his prime was over.

But on any given day in baseball, anything can happen. And all I can say is……Colon shut the Twins out in 6 innings. And only allowed 3 hits. And struck out 2 batters to top it off.

On the other side, Francisco Liriano didn’t fare so well. The fifth inning for him was a nightmare. Corky Miller started the inning wit ha base hit, and moved to second on a bunt from Brent Lillibridge. Josh Fields then walks, and a single from Carlos Quentin loads the bases. And then, 2 consecutive walks from Liriano allows two more runs to cross the plate. Wilson Betimit and “The Cuban Missile” each contributed for an RBI in the four-run 5th inning.

In the 7th inning, Carlos Quentin jacked a solo shot. Brian Anderson also knocked in 2 runs in that inning, to lead the White Sox to a 8-0 win against their hated rivals, the Minnesota Twins.

3 Stars of the Game

1. Bartolo Colon: In his return, he pitched 6 scoreless innings, allowing only 3 hits!

2. Corky Miller: The backup catcher was impressive, going 2-for-4, scoring a run, and had 2 RBI.

3. Alexei Ramirez: The Cuban Missile went 2-for-4, with two RBI. The two hits were his first of the season.

Also, Brett Pill went 2-for-5 for the Connecticut Defenders with a single and a double, leading them to a 10-4 win. He is currently 7th in the Eastern League in batting average (.462), and leading the Connecticut Defenders. He is also tied for the lead in doubles in the Eastern League with 4. Keep up the good work!

Welcome Back Joe Crede…..Or Do I Really Want You “Back”

Today’s White Sox game featured the return of Joe Crede to the New Comiskey Park, except featured in a (gulp) Twins uniform.

The White Sox paid tribute to the fan favorite through a video montage played on the video screen. He received a well deserved standing ovation from the fans. Brian Anderson was most likely launching gum at him from the dugout while Joe was at third. After all, he said there was a 155% chance of that happening.

The highlight for Joe Crede was in his first at-bat…….he hit a home run. After all of the special treatment he received. He could’ve taken it for the White Sox one last time, a strikeout would have been great. But it’s official, he is on the Twins now. Say it ain’t so, Joe!

Also coming back was Jose Contreras, who has made a very improbable comeback from an injury last season. Contreras didn’t fare so well. In 5 innings, he allowed 4 runs and 3 walks. But all night, he just couldn’t locate the strike zone. Luckily for the Sox of Chicago, R.A. Dickey didn’t fare so well either, giving up four runs. The Sox bullpen did terrible, with Clayton Richard, Mike MacDougal, and D.J. Carrasco giving up 8 runs combined. Uh oh, this gave me flashbacks of 2007.

In the first few innings, the game was good. It was a back and forth ballgame. The Twins score, and then the White Sox do. Paul Konerko hit a home run, Chris Getz hit a bases loaded single. Things were good.

And then came the 7th inning. I am not going to go into detail too much. Justin Morneau led off the inning with a homer. And then the Twins kept getting base hits and walks, until they scored 7 runs. To get an idea of how painful this was to watch: Justin Morneau was the first out of the inning. Wait, didn’t he hit a home run in that inning. Yes. And his second time around, the first out was made.

Carlos Quentin hit his first home run of the year to attempt the improbable comeback, but it wasn’t enough as the White Sox lost 12-5.

3 Stars of the Game

1. Joe Crede: I couldn’t resist, his fielding was smooth, he hit his first home run against the White Sox. and he scored 2 runs.

2. Justin Morneau: A four RBI game for this star, including a solo shot, and a sacrifice fly.

3. Denard Span: Denard went 3-for-5, with 2 RBI.

Also, Brett Pill had another great game, going 2-for-4 against the Portland Sea Dogs. He had a double and a single, and currently has a .500 average, first on the team.

Also good news, Jon Wilhite, the survivor of the crash involving Nick Adenhart, is expected to survive, but is still listed in critical condition. Keep your thoughts and prayers with him and his family, as well as the other 3 that weren’t as lucky. Thanks.
